Miniature Paintings

Miniature paintings in India have a long and illustrious history.
Miniature paintings first appeared in India in the 7th century AD, when they flourished under the patronage of the Palas of Bengal. Buddhist books and scriptures were illustrated with images of Buddhist deities on 3-inch-wide palm leaf manuscripts. Pala art was characterized by muted colors and sinuous lines reminiscent of Ajanta’s murals.
They are lovely from a distance. Closer inspection reveals them to be incredible, with stories captured in tiny, complex aspects. Miniature Paintings are a kaleidoscope of history, scriptures, and people’s lives throughout history.
